Documenting the living before they become history. For the dead shall rest in peace. And, nothing is more vivid and intriguing than those which are living.

Portraits of Nature V –

Exhibition at Nilo Gallery, Shanghai

A continuation in the exploration of nature in watercolor as a vehicle to express the eternal nature of things, referencing the value of Dao. In the opening chapter of Dao De Jing, it was said that the Dao that can be named is not the eternal Dao, the Name that can be Name is not the eternal name, as such it is really a challenge to capture the eternal nature of things – it is illusive. The series attempts to capture this illusive nature of things, writing its myriad forms and intangibilities.
The process is one of observation of nature and a series of thought process follows by a quick succession of brush strokes to capture the immediacy of the feeling that is dwelling inside my being and the being of nature. It is through this unity and oneness that the brushes, the strokes, the water, the colours and paper, they come into being, germinating into a piece of work. The works are a reflection of the being of nature and my state of being at a particular moment, which is unique in its occurrence. The works convey the eternal theme of the nature of things expressed through the imageries of plants and trees from the garden and forest of Singapore. They are figments of time and space, with the geo-location of Singapore, the Garden City. It is also an expression of my love for life as art and my country.

Portraits of Nature V, an exhibition at Affordable Art Fair 2013 - exploring the equatorial landscape

Life is but an experiential journey, and "Portraits of Nature" embodies one such journey of questioning and returning to nature. Nature holds the answers we seek; when we embrace her, we are humbled, and in her grace, we find peace.

Through swift and decisive brush strokes, nature is captured in its ephemeral moments, with its essence immortalized on paper.

This series serves as a continuation of exploring nature through watercolor, using it as a medium to express the eternal nature of things, drawing inspiration from the Dao in the Dao De Jing. The opening chapter of Dao De Jing states that the Dao that can be named is not the eternal Dao, and the name that can be named is not the eternal name. Capturing the eternal nature of things is thus a formidable challenge, as it remains elusive. This series endeavors to seize the elusive nature of things, embracing the passion, energy, and scholarly spirit that intertwines with life and art, delving deep into the mysteries of nature, and sharing the wisdom of the natural world with a broader audience.

Portraits of Nature II - Plants of Fort Canning

A series was painted in 2013

Exploring the nature of things through the vibrant medium of watercolors, one embarks on a journey of introspection and reflection, seeking to return to the source of all creation. Delving into the concept of indestructibility, we find within it a semblance of eternity and absoluteness, which may, in turn, reveal an unchangeable truth.

This eternal absolute transcends time, unrestricted and unfettered by its limitations. The challenge lies in capturing this absolute in a visual representation, using nature as a vehicle and watercolors as the medium to portray this profound idea. What, then, is this source and absolute that we seek?

Often, the question arises: "What is art?" Many prefer a painting to mimic the reality they see, admiring the likeness between the painted and the real. However, art delves deeper than mere replication, capturing the essence of the eternal and the timeless, encapsulating the soul of nature and life itself.

In the realm of art, where passion and intellect intertwine, the exploration of the eternal absolute extends beyond boundaries. The connection between photography, painting, philosophy, literature, design, and psychology reveals the intricate threads that bind the universe. The cosmos operates under distinct laws, moving from nothingness to existence. We classify these manifestations into various disciplines, simplifying them to uncover their underlying principles. With this understanding, we can find tranquility and navigate life with ease.

In this literary and passionate pursuit, we delve into the soul of nature, embracing the essence of Singapore's flora and fauna. Depicting the majesty of mountains and waters, and the heartfelt emotions of the rainforest, these creations pay homage to the unique landscapes of the Garden City. Drawing inspiration from the interconnectedness of knowledge, we strive to capture the eternal and the timeless within our art.
